Spreading Your Wings: Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Rheumatological Care

This symposium highlights the challenges that many young adults with lupus experience when making the transition from their pediatric to adult rheumatologists. Studies have shown that the majority (up to 68%) of these patients experience significant difficulties in the transition, and this can have a significant impact on health. This symposium includes the perspectives of experts in the field who provide their thoughts, advice and the practical tools that can really help young adults with lupus get through this critical time in life.

Presenters include:

Sharon Dowell, MD, PhD – Rheumatologist, Howard University Hospital

Dr. Dowell discusses the steps that can be taken to make the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare as successful as possible. She describes this transition from the rheumatologists’ point of view as well as the changes in expectations and responsibilities of the young adult patient.

Arnita Roberts-Christie, RN, BSN, MSN – Patient Engagement Liaison for GSK

Ms. Roberts-Christie provides an overview of lupus and of many of the tools that will help in this transition for young adults with SLE as well as their care providers.

Lindsay Springer, DPT

Dr. Springer is a licensed physical therapist in practice in Portland, Oregon, and is living with lupus.  She is the Master of Ceremony for this symposium.
