Summer brings longer days, warmer temperatures and the promise of outdoor activities.  Yet, photosensitivity, heat intolerance and fatigue can make this time of year incredibly challenging for many living with lupus.  Check out this video to get the latest information and expert advice on how to best navigate the summer and avoid, as much as possible, those summer lupus flares!

Presenters include:

Sharon Dowell, MD is a practicing rheumatologist and professor at Howard University Hospital.  She describe the effects of photosensitivity and UV rays on the skin of those living with lupus, and draws on her medical experience with advice on how sun protection, good nutrition and exercise can help reduce flares in the summer months.

Angela Farrar Small, MSW, LICSW, Mdiv is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist.  In this video, Angela discusses the emotional stresses and social expectations that can affect those with lupus during this time of year.  She describes how mindful self-awareness and a “mindset toolkit” can help with these challenges.  She also describes the positives of summer – the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors (with the appropriate precautions) when the weather is inviting!

Arnita Roberts-Christie, RN, BSN, MS, is a registered nurse and patient engagement liaison with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).  Arnita’s presentation includes tips on managing the lupus lifestyle in the summer months.
